Ahoy humpbacks! A surge in sightings as whale watchers spot plenty feeding off Southern California shores.

Humpback whales have been frolicking off local waters in recent weeks — spotted from Palos Verdes and San Pedro, off Newport Beach and down to Dana Point and San Clemente — delighting marine-life enthusiasts who have been able to see them up close. Whale watchers are hoping for a strong year of sightings for the mammals, which typically head toward Mexico and Central America to give birth.

Learn how to live with lions, our local apex predator.

“(Mountain lions) share their habitat with 14 million people,” he said. “The way the lions see it, their territory is being encroached on by people. Statistically, mountain lions are an insignificant threat to people, but a lack of knowledge leads to conflict, which then leads to dead mountain lions.

Those black bears you see in Southern California, this is how they arrived.

It may be surprising or even a little disappointing, but the iconic black bears that roam wild in the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains didn’t arrive there in ancient times through a process of natural migration, but instead they arrived in 1933, in crates, in the back of trucks.

Climate Refugia: Safe Havens for Vulnerable Species.

“Refugia provide a safe haven during periods of an unfavorable climate,” Morelli and co-authors wrote in the journal PLOS One in 2016. Indeed, such areas — whether they be on mountain slopes, in shady forests, or in deep, cool canyons — are characterized as being naturally buffered from local and regional climate changes. As global temperatures rise, these pockets could help to ensure the continued existence of valued species.
