Margaux's observations journal entry

One of my observations was the plant Rugosa rose and one of its adaptions is the growth of thorns on its epidermis. This adaptation helps the Rugosa Rose to defend itself from being eaten by predators, such as animals, who could be attracted to it due to its sweet smell. All my observations are perennials, and their shared adaptation is that they die during the winter (but keep their roots in the soil) and regrow in the spring. To finish, the English Oak (another one of my observations) is in the genus Quercus of the Beech family.

Camryn's Journal Entry - Giant foxtail

In lab 1, one of the observations I made was of the species Giant foxtail (Setaria magna). This species belongs to the Plantae kingdom, in the grass family, sharing common ancestors with bristle grasses. One adaptation seen in this species are the spikelet clusters on the foxtail which are designed to keep animals away. This adaptation increases the chances of survival and reproduction within the species, ultimately improving fitness. Finally, all observed species in this project are perennial plants. This means that all observations shared the adaptation of maintaining fibrous roots in the soil throughout the winter, allowing them to regrow in the spring.
