Sitting in a sunny spot on the very popular walking trail. Found first by the family dog which luckily was pulled back before it could be bitten.
Difficult to ID woodpecker. Appeared larger than a downy. No coloration beyond its black and white markings. Female?
terrible pict - forgot i had scope in back - i see them in my neighborhood every once in a while - this one flew to telephone pole near newly constructed house in otherwise treeless expanse of ag fields - you can see solid dark head contrasting i think with white belly or perhaps white wing patches - hard to mistake this species with any other - this was adult bird with completely red head - not picked up well in shot) very visible white wing patches that heavily contrasts with black back - flew away northeast towards distant woodlot
sorry for distant shot - long lanky big head long tail thinly striped breat - tail looks somewhat long and possibly rounded in picture though not easy to tell - more obvious looking at imm through scope -
second of two young bald eagles to fly over yard today - this is a white bellied bald - long head long tail white belly white axillaries white in leading edge of wing
saw paired redtails all over CBC area - enjoying nice weather and doing some courting
