Field Notes - Snout to vent length approx 10cm
Distinctive bicolour tail, chubby face, dark fur with pale underbelly
Dead on track, probably Black Rat. Plantation at Portarlington Water Treatment Plant (restricted access).
Guessing from teeth.
Green poo pellets also sighted (so as to distinguish from bush rat) - extensive tunnelling around house and garden unfortunately seems to be nesting (possibly also feeding) in the agapanthas.
This was in temperate rainforest if that makes a difference…
Found amongst small scattered skeleton, longest bone about 1 inch
Sadly this little one was deceased. Possibley pre-dated by a cat. 2nd one within 2 weeks
