Eastern cottontail burrow found in a discarded 12 inch septic pipe in a deciduous forest edge habitat along a backyard. In the second picture, the circled areas indicate evidence of eastern cottontail activity. The red circle depicts evidence of foraging. Eastern cottontails are known to bite twigs at a clean 45 ̊ angle (University of Illinois Extension, n.d.). The yellow circle shows the species’ characteristic spherical scat under ½ inches in diameter (University of Illinois Extension, n.d.).
