Listening in on blue whales may help save the largest animal that's ever lived.

The long-term goal is to find a way to use the acoustic data to count the population off Southern California, Sirovic said.

Tracking those trends could help researchers better understand factors impacting the whales, such as how to prevent them from getting killed by ships traveling through the Santa Barbara Channel.
