Kent VanSooy was a native Californian who graduated with a BS degree in Zoology from Long Beach State, where he studied herpetology under Dr. Richard Loomis. He made a living working in the biotechnology field, but retained the study of native reptiles and amphibians as an enthusiastic avocation. Kent believed that data and information are key to understanding the natural world, and that a more thorough understanding would help land-use managers and government agencies develop balanced policies toward native reptile and amphibian management. He enthusiastically supported introducing young people to the beauty of our native herpetofauna, and helped them form an appreciation of the vital role they play in our ecosystems.
Kent passed away unexpectedly in the fall of 2015. His memory and field work are cherished and preserved by his many friends who admired him for his character and knowledge of nature.
Herp in peace my friend.
