8mm long calyx ciliate margined but not much hair on broad surfaces; corolla tube about 19mm long. L. minimus would have sorter corolla tube; calyx surfaces should be more hairy. The differences between L. minimus and L. bicolor are minute but this population seems to fit L. bicolor best. Only a small patch in the remnant prairie area NW of old fire pit rock pile.
This Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle) was growing amidst moss on the lower trunk of a Bigleaf Maple.
Stinging Nettle is everywhere here on the Olympic Peninsula. In spring, the tender young leaves are delicious in pesto if you gather just the leaves without the stems, and grind them with toasted hazelnuts, sliced garlic, and olive oil. Serve with goat cheese and/or parmesan over pasta, yum!
