Typical truncated specimen from the lower Guadalupe drainage, apparently survived one predator attack but succumbed to the next. 38mm. No pustules on beak or shell, other than wrinkles on the posterior slope. Growth lines visible but not heavy. In addition to this dead specimen, 15 live specimens with the same form and coloration were found.

Guided by the Texas Department of Wildlife and Fisheries' experts it was an easy find. The Golden Orb is one of many mollusks that are diminishing in numbers and may well promise to go the way so many other. Of the three members of the Quadruls species know to have existed in the San Marcos only two are left. The shown location is not the actual site but one of the public access points to the river.

Description

The "other" Guadalupe quadrulid form, probably the ones that past researchers have considered to be Quadrula petrina. It shares many characteristics with compressed forms of Q. petrina in other parts of Texas, including strong growth lines and tiny pustules on the beak, and scattered obscure pustules on the shell. It is more elongated and rectangular than the typical Guadalupe Q. aurea, and is immediately recognizable as different from the smoother Q. aurea shells. It is rarer in this section of the river, with the standard Q. aurea form being about five times as common. In addition to this single 55mm valve, three live specimens were found at this location.
