Lacewing larva with ant corpses on its back.
I was asked to upload this photo here for an ID on the ants.
This manta ray washed up at Morgan Bay two days prior to this photograph being taken. A sudden upwelling of cold water caused the sea temperature to drop by 10 degrees Celsius and this is thought to be the cause of death.
In the pictures, Kevin Cole of the East London Museum is dissecting the animal and taking samples for analysis.
It measured 5.17m from wing tip to wing tip and was found to be carrying a 60kg, 2m wide, baby. Kevin estimates the age of the animal to be about 15 years.
