Agkistrodon contortrix mating
They were mating on a clearing along the trail.
At one point I heard rustling leaves to my right and moved my head about 45 degrees to discover a motionless copperhead eye level (I was on the ground) three feet in front of me, with its head oriented toward me. That didn't address the rustling noise so took a few shots and continued rotating a further 45 degrees to find a fourth copperhead slithering my general direction, with a trajectory putting it in the space between the third snake and myself. It slithered by me and then on top of the mating pair a while before continuing onward.
It was very exhilarating and I saw even more snakes as I continued on.
