My name is Amanda Maloney and I am an ENVS major with a concentration in restoration management. There are many places that I feel have positively impacted me but the one I will mention happens to be my very first site. I was young, maybe around 10 or so and I visited my very first forest with my grandma and it has impacted me ever since. The site, sound, and general feel of the site pulled me in immediately and I knew I wanted to be a part of a system like it. Ever since then, I'd always visit my grandma knowing I would be making my way up to the forest eventually.

My name is Aronriti Mey. Everybody calls me Aron. I am in the ENVS Department concentrating in Restoration and Resource Management. I am from and grew up in inner city Los Angeles. I was raised by refugee parents who had fled Cambodia due to the genocide. I enrolled in an environmental and technology high school where I grew fond of nature. My environmental science teacher took me along with a few students on a retreat to Death Valley which convinced me to pursue environmentalism. Growing up in Los Angeles and being from a low socioeconomic status, I was not heavily exposed to environmental worldviews. As a result of my parents' experiences and the accumulation of individuals I have met throughout my life, I consider my worldviews to contain a love for people as well as the environment.

Hello! My name is Healey Cayabyab and I am an ENVS major with a concentration in Energy. What influenced me with nature was when I was in my sophomore year of high school, and we had this yearly event that my school did and we choices of what to do. One of them is backpacking and carrying your life on your back option. This was hiking through mission peak and taking the online route all the way through livermore. This took a whole week and that was the best time ever. So much so that i did it the next two years. The best part about it is being with people and admiring nature around all the while pushing yourself. There was this one day our chaperone had us sit in different parts of each camp site and just reflect on life and take in the beauty of nature. From all the sounds and the wind on my face, I knew ENVS was something I was interested in.

My name is Mojgan Mahdizadeh and I am an Environmental Studies major with Restoration minor. Just a few weeks ago, I visited Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon which had a huge positive impact on me and recharged my battery for another semester at SJSU. The landscape is beautiful beyond description. I got to see the largest trees on Earth which was such as amazing experience. Seeing the majesty of this place makes you feel humbled and so insignificant compared to the vastness of our universe, and yet it makes me sick to think about how human species try to take the nature under their control and abuse it. Another local place that I visit frequently is Big Basin State park. I love their guided hikes in the redwoods. Every time I go there, I learn so much about the flora and fauna of this peaceful and magnificent place.

Hi my name is Sahand, and I am a graduating senior in applied mathematics. I was influenced the most by nature when I visited Yosemite for the first time 2 years ago. It made me appreciate how important it is to reserve such a vast habitat. It also made me realize how difficult it is to keep it clean from visitors; it was clear to me that preserving nature can be very fragile with how much people waste. I also visited Scotland and the scenery and farmland there was very memorable!

Hello, my name is Matthew Wong. I am a Humanities major. I have visited Australia one time. There were so many new things to see there. I saw penguins, lambs, and other creatures. It was awesome and it made want to go to other places. I want to see what each place have to offer and to see animals in their own habitat. Also, it is amazing to see how some groups are helping animals adapt to the changes made by humans so they won't go extinct. Like making sure their nesting grounds are protected while letting people watch them.

Hello, my name is Kaitlyn Garner. I am a ENVS major, but undecided on my concentration. I am thinking impact assessment or restoration! I'd say the most influence on the natural world I've had has come from my childhood. I grew up in Riverside CA but in more of a rural area, we own 2 1/2 acres of land. My little brother and I ran a muck around there exploring constantly and also helping our mom out in the garden. I loved to spend everyday outside and still have such a passion for the outdoors.

Hi everyone, my name is Jennifer Guzman. I am a Global Studies major with a minor in Human Rights. As a kid, I moved around a lot in Los Angeles and lived in areas where there was very little access to green spaces. For me, places as simple as a neighborhood park were Yosemite to me. My family has always lived in small/crowded places and going to a park was always a space to run and enjoy the sun. As I got older I realized how much of an impact the environment has on people's health and how important it is for marginalized communities to more access to green spaces and have their wellbeing prioritized.

Hello, my name is Nitza Marquez. I am majoring in Environmental Studies with a concentration in restoration and resource management. When I was 11 or 12 years old I went on a family vacation to Hawaii. On this trip I went snorkeling for the first time. When I looked underwater, I was in complete awe. I had never seen anything so beautiful. There were corals and fish of every color of the rainbow. That's when my love and passion for protecting nature began.

Hello! My name is Madison Borgia and I am an ENVS major with a minor in environmental restoration. Ever since I was born, I have travel ed every summer with my family up to our condo in Lake Tahoe. Being surrounded by that kind of environment truly changed the way I think about nature and the environment and paved the way for my passion and love for nature and especially wildlife. Every time i'm up there I am always hiking, swimming, boating, and exploring my surroundings. I am also very big into the outdoors and almost all of my hobbies involve being outside. For example, I enjoy fishing, so I feel that it connects me with nature and different parts of the environment in a different way which has completely influenced my perception on the environment and current environmental issues.

Hi everyone! My name is Navya Kaur and I am an American Studies major. While I've lived in in mostly urban areas for most of my life, I really enjoy being in nature. This past weekend, I spent a whole day in Sanborn County Park, which I found to be a refreshing experience since most of the time I am wandering around the huge skyscrapers/buildings in San Jose.

Growing up, my mom always emphasized the importance of saving earth's resources; whether it be taking shorter showers or composting, I always tried to conserve. In high school, I stopped eating meat and I am trying to go vegan right now, but find that hard since I'm such a picky eater :(

In two weeks, I'll be going to Yellowstone for the first time! I'm really excited to be taking in a completely different kind of nature experience.

Hi guys! My name is Sana Wazit and I'm an ENVS major with a minor in Environmental Justice. I was born in a small town in India and was surrounded by nature, which is where my appreciation and respect for it comes from. My dad is a huge gardener and he passed that interest on to me. Growing up in California and traveling to the varied, beautiful ecosystems in the state has had a huge impact on me and opened my eyes up to the different ways that nature benefits us and the desperate need for it to be valued.

Hello all, my name is Nhan Nguyen and I'm a ENVS Major with a concentration in Energy. One place in the natural world that had a positive impact on me was the Big Basin state park. It was my first real hike among nature and a lot of greenery because before the only hikes I've ever been on was Mission Peak but there wasn't any nice greenery. It's mainly dirt in the summer and grass in other seasons. That was mainly a workout whereas the hikes in Big Basin were meant to be enjoyed.

Hello friends! My name is Kylie Young and I'm an environmental studies major with minors in restoration and environmental impact assessment (EIA). At my community college, I was originally pursuing a double major in studio art and art history. Both art and the environment have been passions of mine throughout my life but decided to switch my academic focus to ENVS upon transferring to SJSU. Lake Tahoe has been a strong environmental influence in my life as my family spent numerous summers enjoying the lake throughout my childhood. This sparked my love for the mountains and specifically pine trees. This past summer I took a trip to Hawaii for the first time and was completely amazed by the beauty of the tropical regions of the valley in Oahu. I have never been in such a tropical environment before and was truly taken back by the surrounding greenery and abundance of vegetation. Quite the emotional experience to be truthful and I hope to have more environmental experiences like this one throughout my life.

Hey everyone. My name is Brandon Ellemberg. I am currently a business major, however I was previously an engineer studying at the University of Michigan. I am someone that struggles with anxiety, and whenever I am having an episode I found that hiking/ running in nature has a profoundly calming effect on me that I have not been able to replicate with any form of medicine. For this reason, and many others, I have always valued the environment and nature very highly.

Hey guys! My name is Anthony Nguyen and I’m a graduating senior majoring in environmental studies with a minor in energy. I’m born and raised in San Francisco from refugee parents. I’d say as long as I can remember, I’ve held a respect to the importance of nature and the environment. This definitely started with the knowledge my dad gave me as well as many memories of being outdoors with the family. My cousins and I always make it a goal every season to go camping, hiking, rafting, and/or visiting national parks. This past summer, we took a trip to Yosemite where I had a great time relaxing and giving my mind some space from everything else.

Hello! My name is Jessica Nguyen and I just transferred from De Anza with an AA in Resource Management and Pollution Prevention. At SJSU I am majoring in Environmental Studies and plan on picking up a minor in GIS. What kickstarted my love for nature is the many winters my family spent at Lake Tahoe, learning how to snowboard and discovering new ways to be active as I was previously a homebody. I love being in the snow and it's so beautiful on top of the mountains :)

My name is Bide Peter Li and I am a senior majoring in environmental studies with a minor in energy. I've always enjoyed nature and the experiences there. I enjoy visiting wilderness areas, wetlands, and other natural preserves. Whether it be from field trips, hikes, or camping, I've found a peaceful feeling that I can't get in the city. I also enjoy taking pictures of wild animals, plants, and the landscapes.

Hello there everybody!
My name is Dao Giang and I'm currently majoring in Social Work as a junior. In 2017, I visited my mom's home country. Vietnam was a beautiful experience but there was a particular village we came across that I took into consideration. There were no technology whatsoever. I felt like I was a caveman just being there. The island was located in the mountains where we had to use a boat in order to set foot onto the island. There were so many trees and wild life. The river we floated on was brown only because of all the mud they had. It was not because the water was dirty by chemicals and human activities. The air felt so fresh that I thought I was inhaling nature itself. It was an awesome experience.

My name is Ferdnando Batista and I am an ENVS Major with a concentration in Park Ranger & Administration. From an early age, nature has been a big part of my life. When I was 9 years old I moved to Hawaii from central Brazil. Because my parents were often at work, I was enrolled in an after-school program that taught students how to plant, harvest, and care for the land. This program forever changed the way I see and experience being part of the natural world. My participation in the after-school program encompassed a traditional saying that has become a part of my life, “Malama I Ka Aina” meaning we must “Care for the Land”.

Hello! My name is Joshua Dane Javillonar. I am a Civil Engineer major with undecided concentration at the moment. I am from Baguio City, Philippines. To describe my hometown with what can be seen here in the bay area is like a fusion of the hilly aspect of San Francisco with the amount of trees from the local redwood parks and/or forests. It was always a pleasant and peacefully environment to live and see everyday. The destruction of places of places like this due to human activity to me is disheartening. This made me more of a environmental supporter in preserving and saving our planets natural beauty.

Hello everyone,

My name is Bhroz Aryan I am a Communication Studies Major with a minor in Psychology. Coming from Afghanistan and the stories I hear about the natural resources there I always underestimated the importance of my home country. However, growing up and learning more about what Afghanistan has to offer I learned that some of the greatest inventions and natural beautiful land is there For example, there is a large amount of jewelry there as well as coal and opium. Living there had a positive impact on me because it grounded me to nature the reason why I believe that I love it was because I came from a humble beginning. Overall, I hope to go back in due time and learn more about the great culture my home country has to offer, however I pray I get a chance to actually see more of the landscape and geography of the country with its priceless plants, trees, and natural resources.

Hello all, my name is Stanley Tan and I am a Humanities (Concentration in Asian Studies) Major. I'm from Oakland, CA but more specifically Chinatown in Oakland. Throughout my adolescence I was obsessed with nature shows and documentaries because I was interested in how the world worked outside of human intervention. And with that in mind, I often explored areas around my neighborhood that had wildlife, including the nearby lake, my backyard, and hills. When observing animals in their habitats it humbled me in a way that made me understand that people are apart of something larger than themselves. This wasn't just in terms of living in a society. I was thinking much more broadly, thinking about the way we've shaped our ecosystems and by association, the animals we shared our part of the Earth with.

Hello everyone! My name is Ivey Ly and I’m majoring in Graphic Design. I’m from the Bay Area born and raised. I used to go visit my extended family in Vietnam back when I was a child, and though most of them live further into the cities I also visited relatives that lived closer to the country side. Having to harvest and navigate themselves through nature, I gained a bit of an appreciation for it back then. Without light pollution, the stars showed wonderfully against the dark blue canvas of the night. Textures, smells, and silhouettes of nature inspire me and grounds me with an appreciation for them whenever I come back to the cities. I want to understand more of it, rather than being in the sidelines while corporations slowly deplete our environment for profit.

Hello all, my name is Michael Kenney and I am an Environmental Studies major with a minor in Japanese. My parents helped me culture an appreciation of the out doors from an early age, going camping frequently and signing me up for Boy Scouts. This like of nature deepened when I took a nature cruise around the islands of southern Alaska. I had never seen an area so ecologically different and biodiverse compared to the Bay Area. We had many intimate encounters with the wildlife that caused me to be super excited and curious about what I was seeing. This trip made me understand how beautiful untouched nature could be, putting into perspective all the messages I had heard about environmentalism and just how important it is.

Hi Friends, my name is Payton Robinson and I an a communication's major here at SJSU. I was fortunate enough to be immersed in the California natural environment starting at an early age. At a summer camp I went to called Canyon Creek Summer Camp, I was first put in awe by the frogs, plants, and animals in the natural creek that ran directly through the camp. I grew up in this environment and went every summer. To this day I continue to learn about the plants and ecological aspects of that place. The second place that truly inspired me to become deeply connected to nature was at another summer I worked at in Malibu Canyon, California. At this summer camp, I learned about organic gardening and the exciting plants you can grow in your backyard. I look forward to expanding my interest and knowledge base this year with this course.

Wassup everybody,
My name is Lathen Gibbs and I'm a senior here at SJSU. Im from Oakland CA, born and raised. I've been an "outdoors type" person for as long as I could remember. When all my friends were waiting to ge tthe new Madden video games,I was outside taking bike rides or walking around exploring my surroundings. I am now blessed with the opportunity to work at a place where I work along side nature. I work in the Berkeley hills at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. We share our facility with hundreds of different animal species such as birds, turkeys, foxes, lizards snakes, etc. Working in such a diverse environment really works as a stress reliever and makes my days so much more enjoyable.
