This project is a student based assessment of marine phytoplankton collected from three locations in the Grand Strand Region of South Carolina. Collections will be made from three piers within a stretch of 15 miles, Apache, Second Avenue, and Myrtle Beach State Park. Water samples will be collected approximately once a week throughout the academic year excluding a break of 6-8 weeks from December to January. Samples will be taken from surface and bottom and abiotic factors will be recorded. A qualitative analysis to identify the phytoplankton community as well as a quantitative assessment of relative species abundance will be conducted.
