Keys to this in Jepson eFlora (https://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/eflora/eflora_keys.php?key=10626), but seems quite different from the subalpine plants. Flora of North America says "highly polymorphic, forming distinct local races" and none of the many named varieties are accepted because "intergradation downslope is completely clinal" (http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=1&taxon_id=250094939).
