Flock of 10, initially thought either to be Common or Arctic Terns. Common are the expected, but Arctic can show up during migration. Our photos finally confirmed that there was too much black filtering into primaries, and that the bill is too long for Arctic Tern.

Rather worn moth feeding like a hummingbird on our buddleia. I'm pretty sure this is a Looper Moth, though perhaps not a Cabbage Looper Moth. Perhaps an Alfalfa Looper Moth?

Great Spangled Fritillary Speyeria cybele

Observer

Description

In our yard. Slightly worn, large Fritillary. Lightly patterned dorsal marginal band. On VHW, small, widely spaced silver spotting, unlike smaller Hydaspe, Zerene or other frits which have thicker more closely patterned spotting. Also, thick, cleanly delineated band of ground color between VHW margin and basal area.
