What

Eastern Garter Snake Thamnophis sirtalis ssp. sirtalis

Observer

Date

Description

Playing "tour guide" in the "wilds" of Perth Amboy, NJ for a Rutgers University research team studying Storeria dekayi for potential genetic adaptations to urban environments. This adult female Eastern Garter was a pleasant surprise, as this species is considerably less common than Storeria at this location. See additional photos of "habitat" (and I use the term loosely, haha!), and photo #5 - the exceptional young Herpetologists working on this interesting project. One of 3 individuals observed along an abandoned railroad bed in a local industrial park. Interestingly, a high percentage of of Garter Snakes in this particular area exhibit this pattern reminiscent of the Maritime Garter Snake (T. s. pallidulus) populations found in central Maine north to Nova Scotia. Vicinity of Perth Amboy, NJ. See additional "habitat" photos. Definitely *not* scenic Nova Scotia, that's for sure! haha!

My favorite pattern morph of this highly variable species - not aware of any "official" studies, but in my experience this "double-striped" form is much less common than typical, with perhaps 1 out of 10 local specimens exhibiting the trait. I've often wondered if this is also true in other areas in which they occur, and if others have noted similar "statistics".

Juvenile observed along an abandoned railroad bed in a local industrial park. Garter Snakes are uncommon to rare in this heavily-developed area, and interestingly, the occasional specimens I do encounter are usually of this dark, "stripeless" morph - as demonstrated by this young individual. Not meant as a real "observation", of course - but I thought some fellow herpetologically-oriented iNaturalists might enjoy seeing this amazing life-sized model of this 45 foot, long-extinct ancestor of modern-day Boas feeding upon an adult Crocodile. Educational exhibit at the NJ Fossil, Gem, and Mineral Show, held at the Raritan Center Expo Hall in Edison, NJ. Kids attending the show were absolutely smitten with the sight of this huge, plastic reptile - exhibit staff were constantly trying to stop them from trying to "ride" it!

Hooray! Snakes are finally out in Central Jersey! Decent-sized female (14") found beneath a "sucker board" I placed in my garden a couple years ago. High hopes in 2019 to see some other species on my "wish list" - like the Norway Rat (Rattus norvegicus), American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana), Cabbage White Butterfly (Pieris rapae), and of course, everybody's "dream" bird species - the nearly-mythical European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), hahaha! But in all seriousness, I never tire of seeing these softly beautiful, gentle, and amazingly adaptable snakes in the field. I've seen uncounted specimens of Storeria dekayi since I found my very first one in 1967 when I was in 2nd Grade, and finding them still never fails to bring a smile to my face!
