Identification of C. alternifolia in Manitoba 1

  • a shrub or small tree
  • leaves are alternate; other shrubby dogwoods in Manitoba have opposite leaves. Note that near the ends of the branches, the leaves grow closer and closer together and appear as if they are whorled.
  • fruit is bluish-black
  • bark on branches is green striped with white

Where does it grow? 1

In Manitoba, the plant is not commonly found. Look for it in mature deciduous forests of southern Manitoba.
