The Red-spotted Toad (Anaxyrus punctatus is a small toad in the family Bufonidae found in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. In spite of the name "red-spotted" many Anaxyrus punctatus in our area just solid tan in color with little hint of the red spotting for which they are named.
These are the second smallest species of toad in Bexar County. They are found in rocky canyons of the hill country.

The call of the Red-spotted Toad is a high pitched trill. The trill of the small Red-spotted Toad is higher pitched than most of our other native toad species.

Similar Species 3

The Red-spotted Toad differs from other toads in our area by the relatively small size and plain brownish coloration with little visible pattern. The parotoid glands are quite small and quite round. There are no obvious cranial crests.

Occasional specimens will be lightly spotted with reddish spots. Other toad species have bolder pattern, are striped or are larger.
