Pileated woodpecker

Nom français: grand pic

This is the big one. They are responsible for the large rectangular holes you can fit your whole hand into.
Most owls rely on the big holes that Pileated Woodpeckers make. As do some ducks, bats and other bird species. It's like they make an apartment building for other creatures. Thanks!

When you see them pecking at a tree, ask: are they hurting the tree? or are they saving the tree from an insect infestation?

If we were to hit out head against a tree with only one tenth of the strength of the woodpecker, we would fatally damage our brain. Scientists and engineers study woodpecker anatomy, hoping it could help us build safer cars and better helmets. We still have a lot to learn from them.
