Description ²

• Leaves/stem: evergreen, dark green, leaves pointed at tip and appear whorled,
• Spores: spore sacs develop on most of the current year's growth, one sac attached to the base of each fertile leaf
• Fruiting season: Summer – early fall
• Height: 5-8 inches
• Habitat: conifer, mixed or hardwood forest, shaded slopes, bogs, conifer swamps
