Fronds: single, undivided leaf, egg-shaped, 2-4 inches long and up to 1½ inches wide, sheaths stem
Spores: spike-like fertile frond, emerges from leaf sheath, stalk up to 5½ inches, 2 opposite rows of spore producing structures at tip
Fruiting season: Early summer
Height: 4-8 inches
Habitat: fens, sedge meadows, marshes, grassy shores
