Downy Woodpeckers are the smallest woodpecker species in North America. This common year-round resident at the Arboretum forages for insects and small berries in forested areas. Downy Woodpeckers may even fly down into the Meadow to pick small insects and seeds from tall flowers like goldenrod. They excavate small, round nest holes in dead or dying trees in spring. Listen for their squeaky, descending whinny call all year long.
