Northern Flickers are uncommon fall and winter visitors to the Arboretum. These large woodpeckers are unusual for their brown color, curved beaks, and tendency to forage on the ground. Flickers prefer to eat ants and often catch them while hopping on the ground. They do not usually tap on trees like other woodpeckers. Listen for their loud, ringing "CLEAR!" calls in the colder months, especially in trees around the Meadow.
