Pileated Woodpecker

Dryocopus pileatus

Summary 5

Pileated Woodpeckers are the largest woodpeckers in North America - they are the same size as a crow. They look much like crows as they fly, except for the bold white wing markings. Pileated Woodpeckers live at the Arboretum all year, often nesting in large, dead trees along the Outer Loop. Pairs of woodpeckers patrol a large territory and call loudly back and forth as they forage for large insects, especially carpenter ants. Listen for their wild laughing calls anywhere near dead or dying trees.
