Belted Kingfisher

Megaceryle alcyon

Summary 4

Belted Kingfishers are uncommon visitors to the Arboretum. These chunky, big-headed birds dive for fish in clear water, and so we usually see them at the Meadow pond and Woodway parking lot ponds. Kingfishers are very noisy and territorial, making loud rattling calls as they fly back and forth across the water. They prefer to perch on bald cypress branches or light posts over water, but they will sometimes perch in tall pines or even on the power lines in the savanna.
