City Nature Challenge 2017 - Day 3

Day 3 of the City Nature Challenge was pretty epic! Even in the rain, we managed to hold onto our lead, and climb over both our observation and species TOTALS from last year's CNC! What took us 8 days last year only took us 3 this year!
At the end of Day 3, our stats were: 12,887 observations / 1744 species / 443 people

And overall for all the cities participating in the CNC, our totals at the end of Day 3 were: 64,424 observations / 5919 species / 2775 people!

Keep up the observation-making today, since Dallas/Fort Worth is right on our heels! Need some motivation? Our friends at the California Center for Natural History are holding two short bioblitz-type events in Oakland today, a lunchtime exploration of Radio Beach and a post-work outing to look for all the interesting creatures that live under the docks in Jack London Square!

Enjoy some photos from Day 3 observations:

@dpom and I assembled a list of birds missing from the project so far. These include Downy Woodpecker, Ridgeway's Rail, Black Rail, Hammond's and Dusky Flycatcher, Tricolored Blackbird, and Common Poorwill, as well as all the small owls except Burrowing. @vermfly , @leslie_flint , @geodani . I am also uncertain how much, if any, coverage of Redwood habitats for plants has happened.

Anything else we need to cover? Most of those birds will be hard to get in San Mateo County, except the Downy and the Ridgway's Rail.

Scored Tricolored Blackbird and Solitary Sandpiper this morning. I'm a bit too far from the redwoods. Has anyone been to Muir Woods?

We're missing sharp-tailed snake. Those should be all over with the rains bringing the slug numbers up like crazy.

There's a Black Rail down at Shoreline Park in Mountain View; I may try for that tomorrow morning, at least to tape it. Could go for Ridgway's Rail at Palo Alto, too.

@dpom, @robberfly , @rebeccafay and @leslie_flint had an epic day along Mines Road, and added some missing species like Rufous-crowned Sparrow and Lewis's Woodpecker!
