2021 City Nature Challenge
Hello! My name is Aaron Lincoln. I'm a Texas Master Naturalist from the Heart of Texas Chapter in Waco. I'm also an iNaturalist addict. I've brought you all here because I'm in the process of creating a new "city" for the 2021 City Nature Challenge and you are active observers in the counties that will hopefully be approved as "Heart of Texas". If approved, the area I think would be included are the counties Hamilton, Somervell, Bosque, Hill, Coryell, Mclennan, Limestone, Falls and Bell. If you aren't aware of the City Nature Challenge, it was a wonderful time during April when cities across the world have a friendly competition to see who can make the most observations and find the most species. Apart from being a lot of fun, the challenge makes a real contribution to science and helps guide policy sometimes in bigger cities once decision makers see what kind of organisms are present in the area. Everything is done on iNaturalist, so you don't have to do anything different, just get out there and make observations. There's usually 4 days for observations followed by a week to upload and make identifications. I live in Bosque County, which currently isn't part of any "city", so I usually drive up to the southernmost county included in the DFW area. I really think that our area with Hillsboro, Waco, Temple, Killeen, Belton, and outlying areas really have something to offer, especially as the area continues to grow and development replaces natural areas.

It was a little too late to get on board for 2020, but 2021, here we come!

Oooooo! To have Laredo compete would be incredible! I wish I knew more folks down in that area... Loads and loads of diversity there -- I was just there in August (crazy hot and windy), but still spotted lots of critters:

Cool. I do love iNaturalist and spend a little time in the wild. 2021 will be here before we know it. I may have to head down to Williamson County and practice in 2020. :-D

How about a permanent project for the area? I see too many observations from this area appearing in the Edwards Plateau Project which are actually not within the Edwards Plateau which essentially ends at the Colorado River. Many Cross Timbers observations are counted in the Edwards Plateau Project, including mine, which should be in the Heart of Texas. Plus, on old maps of Texas, I came across a description for the area above the Lampasas Cut Plains is one shown on the map as the Comanche Plateau, a very fitting description for the Hill Country west of the Balcones Fault that marks the Edwards Plateau as well. It even may be appropriate to make the Lampasas Cut Plain the project name, but it lacks cache to my mind and is limited in extent while the Comanche Plateau is more obscure but so much more romantic a name. Thanks for listening. And sorry to report, I won't be in the area during the time period. Good luck to all, there is great diversity in that beautiful country.
@bosqueaaron Thanks for the tag Aaron! I am mostly in Johnson county, so the DFW crew BUT am also a Rio Brazos Master Naturalist. Our chapter does include Somerville County, so I will pass this on to my fellow TMN's via email so that hopefully that side can contribute to this. If I can make it further south during the City Nature Challenge I'll be sure to contribute. Would love to do some iNatting further down stream.

I got a bunch of porch moths last year in Bexar County during the CNC, even documented it for YouTube when I was on a more creative kick. Kind of leapfrogged your AOI in our latest move so I'll be working more on the north end of "i35ville" (@sambiology, 2021) in and near Collin County but I appreciate what you're doing to try and fill out the corridor.

I think we should share our plans to help canvas the area more effectively. I plan on mothing each night at my Brookshire's in Clifton, hitting Meridian SP, Clifton City Park, 2 ranches in Cranfill's Gap, backroads around Walnut Springs, parks around Lake Whitney, and probably roadsides into Glen Rose.
My areas to cover include Lake Waco Wetlands, Cameron Park in Waco, McLennan County Park on Tradinghouse Creek Reservoir, and Mother Neff State Park. I can't promise I will get to all of those places, but those are my main targets.
I will be observing somewhere in Milam County.
I'll be observing from the Fort Hood and Wimberley areas. On the search for bugs!!
I'll be in Hamilton County at my personal haunt near Shive where I will also be mothing nightly, and I'm hoping to visit Hamilton City Lake, Pecan Creek Park, and the Wetlands.
