Solid yellow eye across nose. Underside is black; upper abdomen is bright red. Looks very similar to a cicada, but smaller, about the size of a quarter.
Found on side of Wolf Springs Rd, past the intersect of India Rd. A rare bird for Dallas county, it had taken up temporary residence in a roadside drain pipe for several weeks.
Mum just spotted this while reading in her chair from the lounge ... shouted "get the camera" and got this from the front door before it snuck up the tree a bit ... only to come down 10 min later and saunter into the neighbor's yard cross the street.
This big guy was sitting in the middle of the bike path on White Rock Trail. An onlooker tried gently prodding him with a stick at the back of the shell to get him to move off the path- the turtle snapped and spun but wouldn't budge.
