Description

Found dead in the (rarely used) food processor bowl! About 1.5cm long. I'm not expert but one expert says Family Vaejovidae for sure and thinks maybe lesser stripetail scorp (Chihuahuanus coahuilae). https://twitter.com/crawlycreepy/status/1290125259329253376

This individual was found at night while blacklighting during the 2019 Pinnacles NP Bioblitz. It was collected by permit from the NPS, photographed the next morning, and then returned to the area from which it was first found.

Description

Scorpions with two metasomae (tails) are extremely rare, with one estimate I saw as one in every 5,000 specimens. This specimen is approximately 3cm long head to stinger and is being maintained in captivity to study its behavior.

I found this using a black light flashlight with BJ Stacey (@finatic) at the Carrie Nation Trailhead parking lot at Madera Canyon, Arizona.

Rainforest Scorpion - Hormurus macrochela
Identified as Liochelidae on Bowerbird by Matthew Connors: "While I was having a look for some info on another scorpion sighting I realised this one was a much better match for Hormurus macrochela, but so far that species has only been officially recorded from offshore islands. The ID was confirmed by John-Michiel Koens"
