Big Thicket National Preserve's official profile

Big Thicket National Preserve is located in southeast Texas, near the city of Beaumont and 75 miles northeast of Houston. Established in 1974, the preserve consists of 9 land units and 6 stream corridors encompassing more than 113,000 acres. The Big Thicket, often referred to as an “ecological crossroads,” is a transition zone between 4 distinct vegetation regions – the eastern hardwood forests, the southwestern deserts, the southeastern swamps and pine savannas, and the central prairies. Species from each of these vegetation types come together in the thicket, where plant and animal biodiversity has received global interest.
