The Rancho Jamul Ecological Reserve is a 5,700 acre holding of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. At the heart of the property is the old Daley Ranch, nestled in an expanse of bottomland and rolling hills that is crossed by Highway 94 and Proctor Valley Road and lies between Jamul and Dulzura to the north and south. For thousands of years this land supported hunting and foraging by the Kumayaay Indians. In 1833, Pio Pico, the last governor of Mexican California, homesteaded the valley. The Daley family acquired the land in 1929, and ranched and farmed the property until it was conveyed to the state in 1998. After decades of grassing and agriculture use, the environment is currently under restoration and closed the public. Guided hikes are offered each year and announced at www.earthdiscovery.org
