Waders of North America

Made a sister project that focuses on a wide array of different waders (flamingos, cranes, limpkins, storks, as well as the herons and ibises too). Feel free to join there too if you like!

Hello everyone!

This is the first blog post, and I have to say, it is quite astonishing just to see how resilient these birds are! Not only the adaptability of the Great Blue Heron to withstand the winters here, but it appears that the night heron species might be also sticking it out as well. My field guide for NY birds that was published more than a decade ago suggested that they only arrived here in the spring and leave to head back down to south. In addition to some of these birds sticking around, I am also really surprised to see a lot of the southern species of ibises have been steadily migrating up north. In particular the Roseate Spoonbill is so close to NYC it is only a matter of time before someone will report one in Central Park or Jamaica Bay!

It is gonna be an exciting year, and cannot wait to see what new observations bring. I am quite pleased to see already.

Best,
Christopher
