Saturday Night

Another wonderful effort. Thank you everybody.

The weather was kinder with odd showers, but cold. And yet our results suggest that everyone was busy all over.
A special thanks to rupert, petro and jacki, who join yesterdays honours list, with all having contributed more than 100 observations.

Reserves needing attention are:

  • Kenilworth
  • Milnerton
  • Sandvlei
  • Rietvlei
  • Bracken

But the four glaring gaps at present are:

  • Table Mountain (incl. Signal Hill)
  • Steenbras
  • Dassenberg
  • Joostenberg

A brief summary of progress with our targets - remember our focus is improving nature reserve checklists - our targets are number of species :

Birds - 76 out of target 250 species
Mammals - 8 of 75
Herps - 23 of 60
Fish - still 0 out of 100
Insects - 62 of 500
Arachnids 5 of 100
Molluscs - 15 of 200
Crustaceans - 1 of 60

Plants - 747 of 3,500
Fungi - 16 of 130
Seaweeds - 4 of 90

Marine - 10 of 650
NEMBA Aliens - 29 of 180

Sunday promises to be a better day, but still overcast and cloudy.
Remember that this is about fun and discovering: go out and enjoy!

Identifications: How do I identify?

click on the link you want - there are no links above, but there are links at
https://www.inaturalist.org/posts/40634-cape-town-targets-great-southern-bioblitz-2020

so for instance, for marine - click on the link
(which should give you this: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=146091)
and on the grey filters box (top right) select the following:

find the date observed panel and set the date "range" by adding 25/09/2020 in the start date (just click on the 25 in the calender)
click the filter box and choose "Identify"
(e.g. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?verifiable=true&page=1&spam=false&place_id=146091&user_id=&project_id=&swlng=&swlat=&nelng=&nelat=&lat=&lng=&d1=2020-09-25)

You can refine the filter on the curator. For instance, it will only show observations that need an ID, but if you want to review all observations that you have not seen, then on the filter box click "research grade" - there are other options that you might be interested in.
You can also refine the taxa: so for instance if you would rather ID starfish, then fish, then crabs, then merely enter their names in the species box (in English, or the family, order of class name if you know them), one after the other when you have completed each.

So for instance, the following Daisies need identification:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?verifiable=true&project_id=great-southern-bioblitz-2020-cape-town&d1=2020-09-25&taxon_id=47604&place_id=any

To activate the curation tool, click on the first card to begin. If you need a refresher course on using the tool, click here:
