5000 records

Dear Get Cumbria Buzzing! recorders.
It's a significant achievement for this community of recorders to have now passed 5000 records entered onto the project data set.
A huge thank you for every single one of those records. They are helping us get a fuller and wider understanding of the distribution of pollinators in Cumbria.
This is helping the Get Cumbria Buzzing! and Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre project team in our work on the forthcoming Atlas of Cumbrian Bumblebees and Cumbrian Pollinator strategy.
As Brucy would have once said - Keep posting!

12thApril - On line - Introduction to the Solitary Bees

At 6.00 pm on the evening of Tuesday the 12th April, Ben Hargreaves from Lancashire Wildlife trust will be leading us into the world of the solitary bees in a 1 hour exploration of this diverse group.

Book at: -
https://www.cumbriawildlifetrust.org.uk/events/2022-04-12-introduction-solitary-bees

In Britain we have around 270 species of bee, just under 250 of which are solitary bees.
These bees can be amazingly effective pollinators and as the name suggests tend not to live in colonies like bumblebees and honey bees.
The purpose of this webinar is to look at the more common solitary bees and their field characteristics.
In line with the other Get Cumbria Buzzing! Webinars this will be aimed at the newcomer or those with a desire to widen their knowledge.

Bees' Needs Week 12 - 18 July 2021

Bees’ Needs Week is an annual event coordinated by Defra, working alongside charities, businesses, conservation groups and academic institutions to raise awareness of bees and other pollinators. As part of our celebrations of #BeesNeeds we would love everyone to get out and take photos of as many bee species as possible between 12th - 18th July. Experts will be checking in daily to verify records, and all the records collected will contribute valuable data to Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre, as well as national biodiversity record centres. This information is vital in informing us of current populations and distribution, helping us to target our conservation efforts more effectively. Together, lets put these mini-superhero's on a pedestal, and help safeguard their future! #GetCumbriaBuzzing! Thank you National Lottery Heritage Fund and Highways England. #NationalLotteryHeritageFund #HighwaysEngland #CumbriaBiodiversityDataCentre #WorkingtonNaturePartnership @buzz_dont_tweet #Allerdale #BeesNeeds

Record the Buzz - in your garden or on a walk! Event

Friday 11th June 9.30am-16.30pm

Help us record as many pollinators as possible on this day! We’re asking everyone to take pictures of the different insects they see feeding on flowers in the garden, or when out on a daily walk in Cumbria. This may be over the course of an hour – or over the whole day, whenever you see them.

Take a photo of insects you find, and try to include as much of the insect as possible in your photo. Then simply upload your pictures onto iNaturalist.

This event is aimed at individuals, children with parental help, families, simply anyone with a garden at home – or is out and about on a walk, and would like to help record as many pollinators in Cumbria on one day.

Your records will contribute valuable data to local and national biodiversity record centres. With your help we will be able to create the first Cumbrian Pollinator Atlas and will be able to track insect populations and movements. This valuable information will help inform us on the best ways to support pollinators across the county.

For more information, please email lucyg@cumbriawildifetrust.org.uk

Thanks to National Lottery Players and support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Highways England, Cumbria Waste Management Environment Trust, Rees Jeffrey’s Road Fund, Cumbria Community Foundation, Tesco, Allerdale Borough Council & Solway Coast AONB. Administered by Cumbria Community Foundation, the following organisations have also funded the project: Robin Rigg West Cumbria Fund, Fairfield Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund, Winscales Moor Community Benefit Fund and United Utilities Legacy Fund.
