This project is for observations of sensitive butterfly species made during the 2020 CVC Butterfly Blitz, as well as observations with locations obscured for privacy reasons (see below).
Provincially-sensitive butterfly species are those that been assessed as vulnerable (rank S3), imperiled (S2), or critically imperiled (S1) by the Natural Heritage Information Centre. These species have an increased risk of extinction or extirpation from the province due to factors such as small population sizes, dependence on certain habitat types or host plants, or threats such as invasive species and climate change.
To protect populations of these sensitive species, the coordinates of their observations are obscured in iNaturalist. Observations with obscured coordinates will not be automatically included in our 2020 CVC Butterfly Blitz collection project - which is why we have created this project.
Please do not add your observations of butterfly species without obscured coordinates to this project - they will already be automatically included in the other project at https://inaturalist.ca/projects/cvc-butterfly-blitz-2020.
