COUNTING CHICKS | Bald eagle population begins to soar on the Channel Islands with record hatchlings.

Restoration efforts for the bald eagle population on the Channel Islands are finally paying off: 20 breeding pairs reared 19 bald eagle chicks. The tally of chicks includes 11 from six nests on Santa Cruz Island, two from one nest on Santa Rosa Island, five from four nests on Santa Catalina Island, and one on San Clemente Island. New nest sites were discovered on Santa Rosa Island at East Point and on Santa Cruz Island at Yellowbanks. There are currently 60 bald eagles living on the islands now.

Tricky taxonomy: the problems with naming new species – Science Weekly podcast.

Species are hard to define, as they don’t fit neatly into the categories that science wants to put them into. But increasingly, people are naming new species without enough evidence to suggest they are indeed a separate taxon. Graihagh Jackson investigates why so-called taxonomic vandalism is on the rise and what we can do about it.

Like the bald eagle, tiny SLO County shorebird is an Endangered Species Act success story.

Locally, the western snowy plover has been listed as a threatened species for many years.

A U.S. Fish and Wildlife service spreadsheet from 2005-17 shows a gradual increase in West Coast populations after a low point in 2007.

More than 2,500 starving and injured seabirds have been rescued in Northern California just since the beginning of this year.

Once gone, eagles flourish in Bay Area skies.

At golden eagle nests in the Los Vaqueros Watershed, six eagle chicks were hatched, raised and fledged this year, wildlife biologists at the Contra Costa Water District have confirmed.

There were no such fledglings — birds able to fly out of their nests — in 2015 and ’17 and only four in 2016, they said.
