My name is Valerio Sbordoni, I was Full Professor of Zoology at Sapienza and at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Since retiring I have continued to research in entomology, conservation genetics and, as a member of the National Academy of Sciences, I am promoting citizen science.
In my research activity of a lifetime, I have dealt with population genetics and evolution of different organisms, with particular regard to butterflies and organisms adapted to cave life. I deal with different facets of biodiversity (www.zeb.uniroma2.it).
Since its foundation I have been scientific responsible for the Italian Biodiversity Network (NNB) and of the Lazio Regional Biodiversity Observatory (OBL), since it was established in 2002, and member of the Coordination Council of "LifeWatch-It" digital infrastructure of biodiversity . I am also a member of the Scientific Committee of WWF Italy, of the IUCN Species Survival Commission, and past President of the Italian Society of Biogeography (2011 2022) and of the Circolo Speleologica Romano (1978-1980, 1982-2012).
My particular interest is cave fauna and butterflies, particularly those of the Palaearctic and Oriental regions.
