Greetings from southwest Oregon!

I live in the beautiful "100 Valleys of the Umpqua," referring to the Umpqua River Basin, in Douglas County, SW Oregon. I grew up in this area, lived 30 years mostly in the Willamette Valley, then brought my family back here in 2010. I have five acres of good naturalist habitat west of Roseburg. I have worked as a wildlife biologist/ecologist both as an agency employee and as a consultant. My experience is mostly with birds, herps, small mammals, and plants, but I am learning a lot about invertebrates these days. I was co-editor and co-author of "Birds of Oregon: A General Reference" (2003). To learn more about my background and experience, see my website and blog at mghwildlife.com.

I use iNaturalist to record my observations for most things, but I use eBird to record lists of birds at locations and to manage most of my bird photos and sounds. My eBird profile is here (you may need to log in or create an account).

I taught biology labs 2017-2019 at Umpqua Community College (UCC), and in Spring 2017 and 2018 taught a new course at UCC, Field Methods for Fish and Wildlife Sampling (NR255, articulated with FW255 at OSU).

I manage a website called Umpqua Birds: Birds and Birding in Douglas County, Oregon that is a resource for local birders and bird enthusiasts.

My naturalist passions include learning new things, discovering new locations for things, and enjoying these with like-hearted people. Please get in touch with me if you are interested in some company or want to go out looking for things with me in the Umpqua Basin! matthewghunter@gmail.com, 541-670-1984
