Carl Charter was born in the desert of South Australia but grew up on the South Coast of NSW and learnt to dive in the diverse waters of Jervis Bay Marine Park. After studying a Marine Science degree in Northern NSW Carl researched and published journal articles on shipwrecks between Byron Bay and Ballina. Carl moved back to South Australia in 2002 to start a family and manage community conservation programs and managed the multi award-winning Reef Watch Program for 8 years before co-founding Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries Inc. (EMS) in 2015. EMS takes thousands of participants, many first-time snorkelers, on marine tours to experience South Australia’s Marine Parks. In 2016 Carl co-founded CuttleFest, a festival run in partnership with EMS, City of Whyalla and the Department of Environment and Water to educate schools and community about the largest breeding aggregation of giant Australian cuttlefish in the world. Over six years Carl has coordinated guided snorkel tours with over 6000 participants from all over the world. A PADI OW Instructor with underwater photography as a specialty Carl spends his ‘spare’ time teaching photography and introducing others to our planet oceans incredibly diverse marine life via guided photography tours in Australia and overseas.
