Copy of photo of young Great Horned Owl that fell out of nest and was found on ground uninjured but not capable of flying yet.
An edited photo of the original when the fledgling was returned to a parent in the evening. Note that the properties of this photo reflect the actual time of events from field notes.

Apparently died recently and was found at the edge of a trail. No scavengers seen and just a few punctures or abrasions noted.

Evidence of multiple fecal deposits in a small area in the rocks above high tide. Possible corn husk remains found nearby.

I was doing a Beach Watch survey and was on the return leg documenting a dead Common Murre when 3 river otters a short distance ahead drew my attention as they walked into the shallow water of Tamales Bay. We were both in the open and as I went for my camera they turned and ran directly off the beach into cover.
This is the third time I have seen a river otter or evidence of presence.
