Description

Female Northern Cardinal in the rising sun in my front yard. February 8, 2020; Clarke County, Georgia. I would call it strange weather, but since we live in Georgia, strange is actually quite normal. Only a few days ago we tied a February record at 75 degrees! Then the following day we had tornado watches and warnings. And today... snow! The morning rain switched to flurries just before noon and left that beautiful blanket of white. The only problem: my family and I were visiting my parents in Greensboro, GA (35 miles south of Athens) and we missed it all! It had all melted before we arrived back home at 5 PM that evening.

April 2017 birding photo journal; Clarke County, Georgia. Although it is the Barn Swallows that are busy about the posts on my neighbors’ front porches, it is an Eastern Phoebe that has once again attempted a nest on our front patio. Two years ago, the nest was destroyed before completion. Last year, the attempt appeared to be successful but was blown down by strong winds several weeks later, leaving unhatched eggs to perish under the overturned nest on the ground. This year’s nest seems of fine construction, neatly padded with fresh green moss, and has so far withstood one very windy day...

April 2017 journal; Clarke County, Georgia. I was poking around my backyard, looking at what was beginning to grow, noting what needs a little clean up. January, 2014; Clarke County, Georgia. The cold has again returned, this time giving us a thin blanket of snow and my kids a few days off from school. Awakening in the morning, I filled all the bird feeders knowing the birds would appreciate an easy meal on such a cold day when all the grass was covered. Toward lunchtime I bundled up and sat near the feeders waiting for a good snow-shot of the Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) and a few others.

When I review some of my first shots on my camera’s LCD, I quickly realize that snow doesn’t come often enough to the southeast, for I had forgotten to make my adjustments. All that white on the ground tricks your camera’s metering in to darkening everything to an ugly grey. I forgot to give my exposure a little boost. You can keep your snow scenes white by...
