Fair-sized adult snake sunning itself with its head out of its burrow. Immediately scrambled backwards upon seeing me. This was the best photo I got.

Tartaruga-Almiscarada (Sternotherus odoratus)Observador
vclarkeDescrição
Dead musk turtle on side of road. Found on its back with a shattered shell. Died sometime within the last few hours, as it was not there when I walked by a few hours before. Likely hit by a car or dropped by a bird of prey. Whichever killed it, the body was gone only a couple hours later, taken by some hungry animal.
The folks at the Virginia Herpetological Society helped me identify this species.

Barred owl sitting in a redcedar tree. Managed to get these pics with the flash on. Flew away as I moved around for a closer look -- didn't manage to get a good shot of it as it flew.
