Unfortunately, I disturbed this pair before I was aware of their presence. I believe the larger, reddish one is a male due to his larger head. As I took the photos, they moved off into a patch of ivy a few feet away and out of view. The male kept his hold on the other as they disappeared into the ivy.

This small bee was feeding on Phacelia flowers.

This observation pertains to the two flies that are mating. It appears the female is simultaneously preying on another species of fly. There were numerous mating pairs of these flies, each with the same species of prey item within a few meter square area.

I have no idea what kind of fly this was. See other observations of this date where I believe I captured several pairs of these flies mating while the female was simultaneously preying on another similar sized fly species.
