Citrine Forktail Ischnura hastata

Observer

oz4caster

Date

Description

Male perched on a narrow grass blade. I normally have a tough time getting a good camera auto-focus on these tiny narrow damselflies, especially when perched on a narrow grass blade like this. But this time I got lucky and 2 out of 3 shots were in good focus. In this situation, my camera often briefly focuses on the subject but then jumps to a focus on the background, often over and over again. I sometimes fall for the brief subject focus but end up with the background focus as happened on my first attempted photo (not posted since it was out of focus). Persistence paid off in this case.

The fork on the thorax suggests Azec dancer, but the dark streaks on the abdomen are more like Springwater dancer. So I'm not confident on the species. I also suspect it is an immature male, but not certain from this viewing angle.
