Within the last week, it became dramatically visible across different regions of my black raspberries. When a surface was rubbed there was no spore dust visible in the air or on hands. Reminded me of aged paint flecks.

Description

This wild-seeded sapling bloomed for the first time this year. This set is to show likely features of reported difference from chokecherry: glossy upper leaf surface, somewhat curled-in serrations, abundant hairs on leaf underside along lower third of midrib. Sepal appearance is inconclusive- I don't have a known chokecherry sample to compare to.

Dense on a sunny bank in an urban lawn, looks like it's been mowed at least once. Keyed out with Flora of VA to either stricta or discolor (since shorter calyx petioles than expected for arvensis). Apparently the deciding factor will be how it looks with nutlets.

I've been keeping an eye on the nest I'd watched last year and this was the first day I caught activity. I saw the female fly up from the nest vicinity a few minutes earlier and then heard some calling in the background and the male came up to the site. He perched ~20 m away from the nest (pic3) for a minute and then I was able to catch him in flight overhead, on the same path the female had just taken.

Track sets along a short stretch of creek bed. At least 1 otter has reportedly been seen in the area in the last few months. A large hickory had fallen across a path in a wooded area a couple years ago and was sawn through to clear the path. Within the last week the main trunk on one side of the path (pic1 and 3rd last pic) has become covered in patches of sawdust, dozens or maybe hundreds of piles. In 3 example pairs, I show a pile of sawdust, and then the 2 mm diameter hole that is revealed underneath once I blow the dust away. The last 2 pics in the set show example logs from the same tree on the other side of the path- all so far untouched by these insects, from what I can see.
