ID based on an iNat visual match suggestion. There were probably a hundred or more of these washed up on Hobie beach this morning. A few bluebottles stranded too.

Inside claw had a long stridulating ridge... the photos didn't come out well unfortunately. So my vote is O ceratophthalmus, but since it can't be verified by anyone, sticking to the genus.

About a 9 mm wide carapace. Had a look at the stridulating ridge - not the best photo but *incredibly difficult to pin down that tiny claw in a photo. But you can still see the tubercles and striae forming a distinct line along the full length of the inside of the claw. This would hardly be visible for O ryderi and a lot shorter in O madagascariensis... and we haven't yet recorded the latter species this far south. So, confident it's O ceratophthalmus :)

Either O ceratophthalmus, O pallidula or O cordimana (all occur in Mauritius) ... I don't think you can distinguish those species as a juvenile without looking at the stridulating ridge... but not familiar enough with the latter two species to know if the juveniles have distinguishing characters we can see in the photo.

Still a juvenile but the pink joints are just starting to show. And the stridulating ridge is much less pronounced compared to the other species we get in SA. Also suspect this crab is a female because the abdomen looks proportionately wider than what it would be for a male, but I don't think we can tell just yet. Excavated it out its burrow.

Counted 26 burrows on this beach this morning. The stridulating ridge on the big claw of O ceratophthalmus is amazing!!
