Unsure if ID is correct. I observed this insect drag a large spider across the ground, defending it from a carpenter ant & periodically flying up to check the route. Eventually it dragged the spider into an opening on the ground where some mud, moss, and roots created an overhang. I presume for its young? The general location was along the Waccamaw River.
