All molts of the local male (it was seen alive today but the feathers gathered up at the roosting area because it’s molting season). Sadly someone cut down the tree that the female was roosting at in past years and it’s nowhere to be found now, nor are its feathers and pellets :(

Description

Finally some molted feathers from the local owls! These were found under the same spot, so i’m assuming they’re from the same individual (or maybe not, the primaries have a bit of a different pattern and 3 more owls roosted at this spot last summer). Last year about 10 different roosts filled up with feathers, but i only had luck with this one this time.. no owls have ever been spotted in the park and i’m still hoping to get the chance to observe them based on where they molt their feathers. Undertail covert, 2 primaries and a central tail feather. Hopefully, more to come

Description

Perfect (recently deceased-but stinky) find over at the tritsis park today. Cause of death is unknown but a magpie or a sparrowhawk could have been responsible for the kill (no cats there). Doesn’t appear to be a juvenile, even though a P10 was not fully grown on one wing and P10 molting season is from August-September. Many wing feathers seemed to be a bit more worn than some others and the inner primaries looked newer (adults molt their inner primaries now). Couldn’t let such a good specimen go to waste, so the parts and feathers were kept for personal research and reference purposes
