Located on mossy soil over rock along the lower road to the pond at the John Burroughs Slabsides Nature Sanctuary, Esopus, NY.

The Cladonia chlorophaea group of pixie-cup lichens can not be separated in the field without chemical tests. They are so similar.
This sample was located on mossy soil over rocks near the summit of Panther Mountain, Slide Mountain Wilderness, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY.

The common name of "Peppered Dog Lichen", or "Peppered Pelt" comes from the pepper-like piles of isidia that often appear on the lobe surface as seen in the inset. This sample was located on a mossy hardwood tree base above the Beaver Kill Creek at Quaker Cove, Big Indian Wilderness, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY.

Descrição

Heterodermia speciosa is a great name for this lichen. It is really "special". The bright white color, the intricate lobes with cilia and the often large thallus make this a beautiful species when you find it. This sample was found on a huge 36"dbh fallen Yellow Birch tree above the Beaver Kill Creek at Quaker Cove, Big Indian Wilderness, Catskill Forest Preserve, NY.

Called "Bristly Beard Lichen" due to the numerous thin spiky fibrils along the branches as seen in the inset.
Usnea "hirta" has so many small, sharp spiky branches it makes you think it would "hirta" you if you touched it.

This sample was found on fallen canopy branch along Stoddard Hollow Road near Delancey, NY.
