Painted Spiny Lobster

Panulirus versicolor

IDENTIFICATION TIPS 2

There’s nothing quite like this beauty - coloration can be variable, especially from juvenile to adult, but colorful in every stage! Young lobsters have stark white antennae and antennules with electric blue/purple highlights on the body; adults have a lovely greenish carapace and abdomen contrasting with blacks and whites, especially on the abdominal segments which have black/white transverse bands. Antennae remain light colored and often have pink bases, antennules can be white/light and plain, or striped. Legs are striped as well. Two pairs of spines on the antennular plate, the anterior pair larger than the posterior. Ranges from the East coast of Africa into the Red Sea, India, Southern Japan and most of the tropical western Pacific.
